Celebrating 240 Years

2024 marks a significant milestone for the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office, as we celebrate our 240th anniversary. Although our roots trace back even further, with the establishment of sheriff positions in Tryon County in 1772 during the early days of the American colonies, it wasn't until 1784 that our county adopted the name Montgomery County, in honor of General Richard Montgomery, a hero of the Revolutionary War. Over these two and a half centuries, the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office has played a pivotal role in safeguarding our community, upholding the law, and ensuring the safety of its residents. From the early sheriffs in Tryon County to the dedicated law enforcement professionals who serve today, each sheriff has left their mark on our county's rich history. As we celebrate our 240th anniversary, we proudly recognize the legacy of these sheriffs who have tirelessly served Montgomery County throughout the years.

First Female Sheriff?

Sarah (Sadie) Wires made history in Montgomery County when she became the first female sheriff in the county's history. Her journey into law enforcement began when her husband, John E. Wires, the sitting sheriff, tragically passed away. This sudden loss led Sadie Wires to step into her husband's role and become the second female sheriff in the entire state of New York. Her determination, courage, and commitment to her community paved the way for future generations of women in law enforcement. Sheriff Sadie Wires's legacy continues to inspire us today, reminding us that barriers can be broken, and glass ceilings shattered when individuals step up to serve their communities with dedication and resolve.
